Why Non-Profits Are So Good at Social Media?

Alexandra Samuel is CEO of Social Signal, a social media agency. She helps companies and organizations increase revenue, build brand and strengthen team relationships by creating compelling online communities and social web presences. She holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University.

Online community and social media are hot areas for business these days, as companies recognize the Internet's potential to deepen customer relationships, share knowledge and strengthen teams. In the nonprofit sector, relationships have always been the key currency: the relationships with the members, donors and supporters that NGOs depend on for volunteer labor, financial support and advocacy muscle.
Because nonprofits are so deeply invested in the relationship business, and because they often have not just a notional but a structural accountability to their members, many NGOs were early adopters of online community tools. NGO-run online communities and social media presences offered nonprofits a new way of stoking and harnessing their members' loyalty and passion; and in their many successes, businesses can find key lessons for using social media to enhance customer relationships, too:

1. Engage your audience by speaking to their core concerns.
Social media marketing campaigns often rely on humor, gimmicks or sex appeal to hook participants. But the best way to your audience's heart is to speak to what they care about most. In the case of the March of Dimes, members care about their kids: specifically, the premature or disabled babies that the organization aims to assist. Social media offered a new way to do just that: Share Your Story launched in 2004 as a site for parents to blog about their infants' daily struggles. Those blogs not only offered a way for parents to connect and support one another, but also told the story of the March of Dimes' mission in a personal and compelling way. What do your customers care about most, and how can you speak to those concerns?

2. Put your audience in the driver's seat.
In 2008, the Brooklyn Museum turned the idea of an art exhibit on its head. Instead of telling audiences what to look at, they asked: the Click! exhibit invited artists to submit photos of the "Changing Faces of Brooklyn" and used an online system to let the community curate the exhibit by choosing what to include. More than 3,000 community members submitted a total of over 400,000 evaluations. The result was an exhibit with greater levels of public interest, and one that was arguably more reflective of the community's self-perception. How can you engage your customers' interest by letting them drive decision-making online?

3. Offer a mix of tangible and social benefits.
The AARP's online community is primarily a way for over-50s to connect and socialize online. But community members also get online photo and video storage — great for those who want to swap pictures of the grandchildren. A more common approach is to run contests with modest prizes, to induce community members to upload stories and pictures; the American Humane Society scored a home run with its "LOLSeals" contest, which asked members to make their own funny seal photos (inspired by LOLcats) and awarded a gift basket to the author of the top photo. Offer a social experience that has intrinsic value by helping people connect, learn or laugh; then nudge people into joining or participating by giving them something concrete like a prize or premium service. How can you help your customers connect with one another — and what tangible benefits can you offer that will encourage their participation?

4. Embrace emergent value propositions
KaBOOM! is a nonprofit that started in 1995 with the goal of building playgrounds in underserved areas, so that every kid would have access to outdoor space. By 1999, the organization was building 50 playgrounds a year — but soon realized it could help build even more by supporting communities in planning playgrounds and raising money themselves. They created a KaBOOM! Toolkit that is now available online. Community members can trade advice online, supporting each other instead of relying exclusively on KaBOOM! staff. The organization also has a user-driven PlaySpace Finder that maps playgrounds across the US. The online toolkit and playspace finder have extended KaBOOM's reach and impact; instead of relying entirely on staff and funders, KaBOOM! uses online community tools to engage volunteers in mapping and developing playspaces nationwide. How can you extend or transform your value proposition by engaging your customers in value creation?

5. Innovate within the bounds of your core mission.
The Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League does what its name suggests: finds homes for abandoned Great Danes. And now they do it via Twitter: tweeting descriptions and photos of dogs that become available for adoption. It's a great example of how social media can not only promote your core mission, but actually deliver on it. What value or services do you offer that could be delivered through a social network or online community?

Non-profits came early to the social media party, thanks to their experience as member-driven organizations. But businesses are succeeding with social media by following the same principles: the principles of community participation, mission-driven activity, and online value creation. Adopt these principles in your own social media activities, and you can profit from the lessons of non-profit innovators.

Five Biggest Mistakes That Entrepreneurs Make

Jerry Kaplan, serial entrepreneur, executive, technical innovator, and author, elaborates on the five biggest mistakes that entrepreneurs make:
1) Having unclear goals and an unclear mission
2) Trying to prove that they are smart
3) Greed - doing it for money.
4) Hiring people that they like rather than people that they need.
5) Not knowing when to let go.

The New Volunteer Management

Nonprofits rely heavily on volunteers, but most CEOs do a poor job of managing them. As a result, more than one-third of those who volunteer one year do not donate their time the next year—at any nonprofit. That adds up to an estimated $38 billion in lost labor. To remedy this situation, nonprofit leaders must develop a more strategic approach to managing this overlooked and undervalued talent pool. The good news is that new waves of retiring baby boomers and energetic young people are ready to fill the gap.

Volunteers can do much more than stuff envelopes.
A few nonprofits have grasped this concept and are taking what we call a talent management approach—investing in the infrastructure to recruit, develop, place, recognize, and retain volunteer talent.

CAPITALIZING ON VOLUNTEER TALENT

To capitalize on the opportunity presented by volunteer talent, nonprofit leaders need to expand their vision of volunteering, integrate volunteers into their strategic planning, and reinvent the way that their organizations support and manage volunteer talent.
If nonprofit leaders want highly skilled volunteers to come and stay, they need to expand their vision of volunteering by creating an experience that is meaningful for the volunteer, develops skills, demonstrates impact, and taps into volunteers’ abilities and interests. More people need to understand that people will make time to volunteer if they are stimulated and engaged. People do not volunteer because nonprofits do not provide them with volunteer opportunities that interest them enough to pull them away from their television sets.

Rethinking Work Roles.
To create compelling opportunities for volunteers, a nonprofit’s management team should begin by evaluating the degree to which important roles could be performed by volunteers. Some organizations are elevating the roles of volunteers and blurring the distinctions between paid and nonpaid staff .

Assigning Appropriate Tasks.
Nonprofits must assign volunteers jobs that make the most of their skills and talents. For example, marketing experts from the consulting firm Deloitte & Touche were preparing for a traditional volunteer project—taking stock of donated inventory at a thrift store operated by Catholic Charities USA. But the Deloitte workers saw ways the thrift store could employ new merchandising techniques and offered pro bono consulting services to help make the changes. The changes the Deloitte volunteers suggested produced strong results: Average monthly revenue at the store rose 20 percent. Not only do nonprofits get more value from using highly skilled volunteers to perform highly skilled functions, but these volunteers are also more likely to offer their services again.

Creating Bonding Experiences.
One of the best ways that nonprofits can engage volunteers is to create experiences that develop strong attachments between the volunteer and the organization. The March of Dimes, for example, is constantly thinking about how to channel the interest of a onetime volunteer into a more sustained commitment. A volunteer might walk in the March for Babies two years in a row and then drop out. That person has not necessarily lost her passion for helping babies, she just needs a new challenge and more opportunities to stay involved. To keep her engaged, the March of Dimes might ask her to speak with groups of expectant moms on the importance of folic acid and prenatal checkups. That could lead to her managing a local fundraising event or recruiting corporate sponsors. The March of Dimes has found that by increasing responsibility, tailoring assignments to volunteer interests, and providing training and in-person networking opportunities, they are able to hang on to more volunteers.

Supporting and Training Volunteers.
Nonprofits also need to support their volunteers. The American Cancer Society, for example, respects and cares for volunteers in the same manner that the organization cares for its own staff . Their chief talent officer ensures that staff and volunteers participate together in orientation and training classes and work together on important projects such as creating curriculum, delivering quality of life programs to cancer patients and their families, and serving as community health liaisons. The American Cancer Society also expects its staff to recruit and work with community volunteers, and it enforces this through performance reviews that measure volunteer engagement.

Using New Technology.
New technologies allow nonprofits to communicate with volunteers inexpensively and to build social networks that connect volunteers with one another and with the nonprofit. Organizations like VolunteerMatch and Zazengo have developed technology that makes it easy for volunteers to find opportunities based on their needs, interests, and skills. With this technology, volunteers no longer need to go to a Web site to search for opportunities; the right ones come to them. Technology also allows people to volunteer without having to leave their homes. One of our colleagues, for example, develops and maintains Web sites pro bono without leaving her home.

Developing Strategic Plans.
To make effective use of volunteer talent, nonprofit leaders must integrate volunteers into their strategic plans. In 2007, the leaders of 11 major nonprofit organizations and the authors of this article met to discuss ways to engage volunteers and laid out the ingredients for this process. Nonprofit participants such as Goodwill Industries, United Way of America, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America zeroed in on strategic planning as the most critical and neglected step in managing volunteers. By treating volunteers as the valuable resource they are, nonprofits get more challenging work done, reap the benefit of more volunteer hours, and incur fewer costs associated with having to replace lost volunteers each year.

ATTRACTING A NEW WAVE OF VOLUNTEER TALENT

Even with the best planning and management, nonprofits will always need to recruit new volunteers to support new or expanded programs and to replace those volunteers who inevitably stop coming. The most promising places for nonprofits to recruit new volunteer talent are among retired baby boomers, young people (millennials), businesses, and religious organizations.

A new wave of volunteer talent is building. Some nonprofit leaders will take advantage of this opportunity and exponentially grow their impact; the rest will be left behind trying to make do the old way.

Επιτυχία ή ευτυχία;

"The Art of Doing Nothing" ή αλλιώς "Δεν κάνω τίποτα γιατί θέλω να Πετύχω"!

Art of doing nothing

No.1 Time Management Skill: Doing Nothing

According to Webster's Dictionary, a slacker is "a person who shirks work or obligation." But lest we allow Webster's to be the be-all and end-all of the English language, urbandictionary.com has a different definition; "a person who chooses the path of least resistance." More, "a slacker is someone who, while being intelligent, doesn't really feel like doing anything." And even, "a nice person to chill with." Slackers, it's clear, have a knack for inertia and a way with "nothingness."

"Slacker" has been so potent a label that it's inspired two movies: "Slacker" in 1991, and "Slackers" in 2002. And while the word "slacker" brings to mind images of a flannel shirt-clad Ethan Hawke, brooding his way through "Reality Bites," there's actually a long history behind the surly pose of the disaffected 20-something.

Sarah Dunn, author of the "Official Slacker Handbook," notes that, "a lot has been said about the slacker's trademark indolence, but the point must be made that deliberately opting out of socially-recognized forms of activity isn't the same thing as stumbling into inaction." In other words, Dunn argues, slacking off isn't just laziness--it's pointed laziness with a philosophical basis.

In Europe, the average vacation time is 5 weeks per year. Ιn North America, it’s 2 weeks, and even that is stretching it. I know people that even when they are on vacation, they still carry around their laptop and cell phone, and are never truly disconnected from their work. You see, real time off means that it’s time to focus on yourself. A few weeks ago, I went up north to a cottage with a friend and for the whole day, I did not turn on my cell phone or checked emails. That’s one of my most important rules for vacation time, whether I leave 1 week or 1 day. I disconnect myself completely from work and every day life. So imagine, with very little vacation time we already have compared with the rest of the world, we still pollute this very little time with such things that do not belong on a vacation. Do yourself a favor and next time you take some time off, do not use your phone or a computer. Only then can you truly take full advantage of your time off.

You have to learn to put yourself first. This is why taking adequate time away from your routine is so crucial. Most people do not meditate or relax in any way throughout the whole year. So their vacation time is truly the last bastion of relaxation they have. Taking good care of your mental psyche includes having the initiative of giving yourself the proper time to relax and unwind. Clearing your mind is not only good for reducing all the stress that you accumulate during everyday life, but it is also useful in terms of taking a step back and re-assessing what you are doing and what direction you are undertaking.

I can tell you that a lot of creative ideas came to me while I was vacationing. Once you “take out the trash” mentally, and have a clean slate to think on, you will be amazed at the ideas and creativity that comes out. Usually, during your routine, you have so many things to think about that there is just simply no time nor room for out-of-the-box thinking. Looking from a different angle or perspective can really open your eyes to things you may have never thought about before.

These days, some of our most famous thinkers would be considered slackers. After all, Thoreau lived comfortably at Walden while only working six weeks a year and Descartes devised Cartesian geometry while hanging around the streets of Holland. And though "slacker" is often considered an insult or an accusation, some choose to reclaim the term as a sign of creativity and resourcefulness.

As Winnie the Pooh once said, "Don't underestimate the value of Doing Nothing."

Let's Talk about Destination Marketing

Τί είναι ένας τουριστικός προορισμός;

(Medlik & Middleton 1973)

Pop King Died and Traditional Media Died Too?

1. Αντέχουν τα νέα μέσα ένα τέτοιο "ηφαιστειώδες" (όπως είπε το Google Trends ) γεγονός;
2. Μαζί με τον τραγουδιστή θα θάψουμε και τα παραδοσιακά μέσα;

1. Αντέχουν τα νέα μέσα ένα τέτοιο "ηφαιστειώδες" γεγονός;

"How many people does it take to break the Internet? On June 25, we found out it's just one -- if that one is Michael Jackson." (CNN report)

The biggest showbiz story of the year saw the troubled star take a good slice of the Internet with him, as the ripples caused by the news of his death swept around the globe.
On Thursday, the TMZ site, better known for embarrassing photos and "dish" than hard reportage, beat everyone. The 911 call from Jackson's home went out around noon Los Angeles time; TMZ reported the cardiac arrest within an hour.
"We've just learned Michael Jackson was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Los Angeles... and we're told it was cardiac arrest and that paramedics administered CPR in the ambulance... and it's looking bad," it said.
It followed up shortly afterwards with: "We've just learned Michael Jackson has died. He was 50."
The massive level of interest caused the site to go down temporarily but that did not stop the news spreading via blogs and social networking sites. TechCrunch reported that TMZ, which broke the story, had several outages; users then switched to Perez Hilton's blog, which also struggled to deal with the requests it received.
Twitter saw a large spike in users with up to 5,000 Jackson-related messages being posted per minute, which slowed the service's speed.
Soon after news of his death emerged Jackson-related topics dominated Twitter's list of most popular subjects being discussed on the site. Twitter slowed to a crawl, as Jackson-related posts climbed to more than 100,000 an hour.
Biz Stone, co-founder of the messaging site, said: "This particular news about the passing of such a global icon is the biggest jump in tweets per second since the U.S. presidential election.”
Facebook saw a similar response, with the number of postings tripling during the hour after news of Jackson's death broke, according to a spokesman.
people searching for news on the singing phenomenon, with a number of contributors posting conflicting reports of his condition for a short time.
Google, the search engine, also encountered problems for a time due to the demand. So many people wanted to verify early reports of his death that computers running Google's news section interpreted the "Michael Jackson" requests as an automated attack for about half an hour.
Soon his death was dominating the top 10 list of Google Trends, which monitors web searches, with up to seven of the slots dedicated to Jackson subjects at one time.
At its peak, Google Trends rated the Jackson story as "volcanic."
Google turned away Jackson queries with this message: "We're sorry . . . but your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer virus or spyware application. . . . We can't process your request right now."
The Instant Messaging feature at AOL crashed for 40 minutes, as thousands sought to tell the news directly to thousands of others. That was backed up by AOL consumer adviser Regina Lewis, who said that, although the numbers weren't in yet, the day should prove a historic milestone for mobile Internet traffic. "It could go down as the biggest mobile event in history," Lewis said.
"One, people clamor for the latest news; two, they share it; three, they react; and then the next stage, which we're seeing alive and well on video sites ... are tributes. In the case of Michael Jackson and Farah Fawcett, [people have] a lot to work with in terms of images and video," she said.
By Friday morning, news sites seemed to be coping with traffic, but Jackson fan site mjfanclub.net was still performing sluggishly. Mashable.com reported that tributes to, and remarks upon, Michael Jackson's death were responsible for 30 percent of tweets.

2. Μαζί με τον τραγουδιστή θα θάψουμε και τα παραδοσιακά μέσα;

When the next set of BBC management expenses is published, it would be no surprise to find senior news executives charging for a subscription to tnz.com. Because, on Thursday night, the American entertainment gossip site was ahead of the world's major news organisations with the news of Michael Jackson's death.
Though creditable – and allowing the online provider a quick chorus of "beat it!", aimed at the famous networks – this victory brings some shivers. The news newcomers work by rules on reporting and sourcing that are different from those of traditional television journalism. On this occasion, the web whisper proved to be the entertainment news scoop of the decade; many other times, such buzz turns out to be as reliable as sightings of the Loch Ness Monster.
Yet, even so, the coverage of the singer's death was the greatest demonstration to date of the way in which new media have revolutionised TV news. No outlet now dared to wait for the old insurance of at least two reliable reports. CNN, Fox, Sky News and BBC2's Newsnight all cut into their running orders with the first tnz.com flash.
In the past couple of weeks, social-media sites have been instrumental in keeping people in the loop about Iran's unrest and Michael Jackson's death, highlighting a transformation in the news-delivery industry. The shift, years in the making, has given social networks and their close cousins like YouTube a bigger role in how people learn about and react to world events while leaving newspapers and television struggling to adjust.
Millions of people no longer rely on a morning paper, or its online equivalent, to get news. Rather, many are tipped off by friends or complete strangers through Twitter and Facebook, in posts that appear alongside family snapshots, random complaints and movie recommendations.
"The first place people go are these social-networking tools rather than the conventional media," said Shannon Vallor, a philosophy professor at Santa Clara University who studies social networking. "More people are using the major media outlets as places to go after they've heard the basic story to get more information."
Social-media sites played a somewhat different role in Iran, where political unrest erupted earlier this month. Unlike Jackson's death, the sites were used to disseminate eyewitness accounts instead of to repeat what had been reported elsewhere.
To get around a crackdown on professional journalists in Iran, supporters of the Iranian opposition candidate used Twitter, Facebook and YouTube to raise global awareness about their protests and the violence that the government used to stop them. A camera phone video showing an Iranian woman bleeding to death in the street ultimately made world headlines.
Jeff Jarvis, director of the interactive journalism program at City University of New York and author of the media blog BuzzMachine, said the growing popularity of social-media sites is recasting the job of traditional journalists. He sees them as curating, vetting and giving context to news that bubbles up from teams of reliable amateurs they've already recruited.
To get extra exposure, some news organizations are already making links to their articles available through Facebook and Twitter, so users can share them. There's no guarantee that people will visit their Web sites directly, he said.
News organizations, Jarvis emphasized, "can't wait for everyone to come to them."
However, the risk is that people on social-media sites read the news headlines without clicking through to the publication's Web site, eliminating an important source of revenue. Jarvis said that it was always a myth that newspaper readers read every article in print and that, in the digital era, they have to take particular care to write headlines that entice people to click on the links.
Social media is shaping up to be the latest challenge for traditional media, which is still grappling with how to reinvent itself in an increasingly digital world.
Although social-media sites have been credited with breaking news on occasion, they are also prone to spreading false rumors. For example, Twitter posts on Thursday inaccurately reported the death of actor Jeff Goldblum. It's a distinction that traditional media has used to bolster its case for relevance.
Ken Doctor, a news industry analyst with Outsell Inc., a research and advisory firm with offices in Burlingame and London, sided with the social-media sites in saying that people want speed first. Erroneous information is usually corrected by fellow users on such services, making news more of an evolving process.
"People want to know first, even when things may be wrong," Doctor said. "But the crowd will then correct it quickly."
This is the way things are now: live broadcasting can wait for nothing – not even death. In the 50 years that Michael Jackson lived, the rules of journalism have gone from wait-and-see to show-and-wait.

Stay tuned!

Batman's a scientist?!

Marge: Homer! There's someone here who can help you...
Homer: Is it Batman?
Marge: No, he's a scientist.
Homer: Batman's a scientist?!
Marge: It's not Batman!

ΑΠΛΑ;
Μήπως τότε είμαι στο σωστό δρόμο;
Αντίθετα τα πολύπλοκα σχέδια έχει βρεθεί από έρευνες πως συσχετίζονται με αρνητική εντύπωση του κοινού-στόχου (An overly complex mark will offer a negative impression to your target audience).

How to Use Market Research in a Recession

by John Quelch (*)

Recession-challenged consumers are buying less, looking for deals, or switching to different brands, product categories, or stores. Some are even changing long-held attitudes toward consumption. To many folks, filling the home with more stuff or keeping up with the Joneses is no longer appealing.
As a result, the degree of uncertainty in business and consumer markets has soared. Yet, to conserve cash, most firms are reducing spending on the market research that would help manage that uncertainty. In the U.S., spending on market research has dipped for four consecutive quarters, and chief marketing officers don't expect the situation to turn around soon. Most big consumer marketers are seeking to shave 10 to 20% off of research budgets.
In flush times, a rising tide of consumption can compensate for less than optimal branding, positioning, pricing, or segmentation. That is certainly not the case now. At the same time that marketers must pare down research expenditures, they face added pressure to secure high-quality data and insights.
I recommend that CMOs take the following seven steps to minimize the impact of reduced spending.
Stay focused. Savvy marketers focus their research on the products, brands, and markets that are key to their marketing strategy. In a recession, it's essential to get a clear read on existing core customers, including those who are most loyal to the brand and those who are most profitable, rather than fritter away research resources on potential or peripheral consumers. When times are good, there is budget available for increased research on secondary products or customers. Now, nice-to-knows that are not essential will have to wait.
Enlist trusted partners. Marketers and research suppliers who trust each other and have established long-term relationships can jointly plan how to extract more insights and make better decisions based on fewer expenditures. For example, combining data sets may reveal new leading indicators of changes in consumer behavior. Tracking studies may have an edge over one-off projects. CMOs who trim costs by consolidating their budgets with an integrated research supplier should insist that the supplier aggressively explore synergies across its various component agencies as well as eliminate research redundancies.
Value experience and judgment. CMOs should tap the knowledge and intuitions of managers and researchers who've lived through previous recessions. In setting prices, for example, such insight can help calibrate the optimal level of price promotion offers. Experience also reveals proxies: in tough times, some marketers use research results from Sweden as a proxy for Scandinavia, rather than conducting the same research in all Scandinavian countries.
Seize opportunities overseas. Some large multinational marketers, such as Unilever, are shifting research expenditures away from Western Europe and toward emerging markets in Asia and Latin America. Relative to the developed economies, the costs of research in emerging economies are less and the payoff from incremental insight can often be greater. Brand preferences and consumption levels in emerging markets such as China, India and Brazil tend to be more fluid. Consumer research is therefore critical to aid marketers trying to cement brand preferences early on as these economies develop.
Go online with a dash of skepticism. Online research is cheap, fast, and the wave of the future. Tools like SurveyMonkey allow non-expert users to create custom surveys in minutes. As an alternative to offline focus groups, custom online panels of consumers can be formed for qualitative research on new product ideas or new ads. Taking the do-it-yourself approach rather than outsourcing to a market research firm is attractive in a cost-cutting era, but you risk getting no more than what you pay for. The opinions of convenience sample of an enthusiastic online brand community may not represent all users.
Don't cut across the board. Just as important as knowing where to cut research is knowing where not to cut. When marketers are creating fewer new ads and introducing fewer new products, it is doubly important to use rigorous pretesting to select the strongest alternatives. In categories where the bases for consumers' value judgments are changing, modest expenditures on copy research can prevent blowing much more money on ineffective messaging. Adding a few questions to standard tracking studies is a low-cost way to shed light on changes in customer attitudes and purchase behavior. For key products, running conjoint studies to check on shifts in price elasticities of demand and price-attribute tradeoffs can usefully improve the profitability of pricing decisions at a time when cash is king.
Keep an eye on the new consumer. No one has a perfect record of predicting the future, and the recession is making it harder for consumers to envision or articulate their needs. Even so, and despite budget pressures, smart marketers devote a portion of their market research to getting a handle on future changes in consumer behavior. Are consumers of your brand going to revert to previous consumption patterns when the recession ends? Or are they developing coping mechanisms that will endure, especially if the recession is lengthy? What new products and services will consumers be open to embracing? If, as in the financial services category, consumer confidence and trust in brands have been seriously eroded, how long and what steps will it take to regain them? Eventually, the recession will end, and future success depends on being well-positioned, based on sound research, when it does.

EMAC2009...firms can only offer a value proposition; value actualization is performed by customers !

New Service-Dominant (S-D) Logic presents its message through ten foundational premises. In brief, these premises put the following to the fore:
Service is the fundamental basis of exchange and all social and economic actors (firms, customers, etc) are resource integrators that interact through mutual service provision to co-create value.
“Service” refers to the process of one actor’s resources for another actor’s benefit, and should not be confused with “services” – intangible goods; goods are merely distribution mechanisms of service provision.
Both firms and customers are viewed as active participants in the value-creation process as opposed to the mainstream marketing idea that firms create and deliver value and customers just react and consume it.
That is, the customer is always a co-creator of value.
Thus, firms can only offer a value proposition; value actualization is performed by customers idiosyncratically, in the context of their own lives.
The network aspect is implicit through the statement that all social and economic actors are resource integrators, implying that value creation takes place through interaction in complex networks.
S-D logic is intended to capture evolutionary thinking about value creation and exchange and is subject to ongoing, open development.

Marketin.Me first

I was born and raised in the historic village of Olympia (the birthplace of Olympic Games) where I first came in touch with my today’s field of study, Tourism!

Afterwards, I moved to Athens –at my sweet Exarhia- where I discovered the big unknown….Marketing! Being inspired by Prof. Avlonitis and his colleagues, I began to love Marketing science (or Art instead?). So, I decided to combine both, Marketing and Tourism.
Under these circumstances, I had to go seaside, at the University of Piraeus, which is my academic home ever since. For the time being, I am finishing my PhD dissertation under the supervision of Prof. Kouremenos, an inspiring and pioneer researcher in both fields of study.

During all this time, I have worked mainly as a lecturer in academic institutions but also in diverse positions, among others as a marketing assistant at a world leader B2B enterprise, a volunteer at a river eco festival, and a sales promotion girl to fund my stay in Birmingham during Erasmus period. Finally, I used to be self unemployed for a year just to start writing down my thoughts in a piece of paper.

Recently I founded along with my friend and colleague Maria, CVexperts Co. (www.cvexperts.gr), a career consulting company that aspires to help individuals in their professional life. My idea for launching CVexperts in the Greek market was to meet an unmet need and fill in the gap: the lack of personal career consulting for the people who constitute the backbone of every business. Every client has a unique profile and therefore a unique resume and career plan and strategy.

For the future, I have too many ideas. But I am not in a success hurry. For me, time is my money, so I measure success in terms of happiness. I always have time for a coffee in a manic Monday morning at Monastiraki with my sister, a raki with my friends at Thisseio, my pilates lessons, and my passion to travel and live with indigenes, like Chiapas in San Cristobal, Mexico.

Concluding, what pieces together everything I have done or do is my passion to learn. I always introduce myself as a “lifetime student”. That’s what I really am.

"The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn." -- Alvin Toffler (futurist, writer).
